Gutter Replacement & Maintenance in Colorado Springs

Updated: 3 days ago

Protect your home from costly damage with proper gutter care.

While Colorado Springs is known for its 300 days of sunshine, monsoon season from June to October can bring intense, unexpected rain showers. Without well-maintained gutters, this water can accumulate around your home’s foundation, causing damage like erosion, cracking, structural issues, puddling, and attracting unwanted pests.

Fortunately, there are steps you can take to prevent this. Whether it’s a simple gutter guard installation or a full gutter replacement, this guide will walk you through what you need to know.

Why Gutter Guards Matter

If your gutters frequently clog or collect debris, it may be time to install gutter guards. Gutter guards help prevent blockages and keep water flowing properly—protecting your home all year long.

DIY Gutter Guard Installation (It’s Easier Than You Think)

  1. Purchase the gutter guards – You can find them at local hardware stores like Home Depot.

  2. Grab a ladder – Make sure it’s placed on level ground and safely secured.

  3. Slide the guard under your roof shingles – Align it neatly with the gutter.

  4. Clip the outer edge to the gutter lip – And you’re done!

Installing gutter guards is a quick, affordable DIY fix that saves you time and protects your home from drainage issues.

Full Gutter Repair & Replacement: Step-by-Step Guide

Key Terms to Know

  • Rafter Tails: Ends of roof rafters that support roof overhangs (eaves).

  • Fascia: Vertical board along roof edge—where gutters are mounted.

  • Drop Outlet: Connects the gutter to the downspout.

Tools & Materials

  • Gutters, Hangers/Brackets, End Caps

  • Downspouts, Elbows, Drop Outlets

  • High-quality silicone caulk

  • Chalk line, Level, Ladder

  • Drill, Tape measure, Saw (miter, hacksaw, or aviation snips)

  • Marker/pencil, Gloves, Safety glasses, Sturdy shoes

Step 1 – Measure & Plan

Use a tape measure to get the total length of your roofline. For proper drainage, plan to install one downspout every 30 feet. While mapping out your layout, note where your end caps and drop outlets will go.

Step 2 – Mark the Slope

A proper slope is essential for water flow. Gutters should drop about ¼ inch for every 10 feet of length.

Formula: Length of gutter (in feet) × 0.025 = Total required drop in inches Example: 20 ft × 0.025 = 0.5" drop

To mark the slope:

  • Determine your high and low points based on downspout location.

  • Stretch a chalk line between those two points.

  • Use a tape measure to mark your calculated drop, then snap the line.

Step 3 – Cut Gutter Sections

Measure twice, cut once! Use a saw to cut your gutter sections to length. If you need multiple sections, overlap them by about 8 inches to ensure proper water flow.

Step 4 – Attach End Caps

End caps go on any straight, open ends. Make sure you buy both right and left-side caps, depending on your layout. Use silicone caulk inside the seams to ensure a watertight seal.

Step 5 – Cut Downspout Holes

Mark where your downspouts will go. Trace the shape of the drop outlet on the gutter, double-check your measurements, then cut carefully. Apply silicone caulk around the edge and secure the outlet with screws.

Step 6 – Install Hangers

Clip hangers onto the gutters, then attach them to the fascia at each rafter or truss. These provide crucial support, so make sure they’re spaced properly.

Step 7 – Install Gutters

Now you're ready to hang the gutters. Line them up with your chalk line and secure them using the hangers, starting from the high point and working toward the downspout.

Step 8 – Add Downspouts & Elbows

Connect your downspouts to the drop outlet with screws or rivets. Use elbows as needed to direct water away from the home’s foundation.

Step 9 – Seal All Joints

Anywhere gutter sections, corners, caps, or downspouts meet, apply silicone caulk to prevent leaks. This step is key to protecting your home.

Step 10 – Test the System

Run water through your new gutters using a hose. Make sure water flows cleanly toward the downspouts without pooling or overflowing. This test also helps you spot any sealing issues or areas that need adjustments.

Wrap-Up

Congratulations! You’ve just completed a full gutter install. Whether you added guards or did a full replacement, your home is now better protected against water damage.
